Need a Good Book?

I saw this on Pinterest with the label-"This is the what reading a good book feels like".  So true.

I've been doing a lot of reading, but I haven't got around to blogging about it.  So here's a big long list. I'll start with two books with the same subject matter.

Mr Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange-no literary masterpiece but a great way to spend a few hours in the company of Mr. Darcy. ***1/2

The Private Diary of Mr. Darcy by Maya Slater- I think Slater got the language down, but I hated what she did to Mr. Darcy. He should be noble, righteous, and just.  However this books paints him in quite a different light.  He stands by and allows 2 friends to rape an innocent servant girl, he visits brothels, and carries on with house servants.  Since Mr. Darcy is my imaginary literary boyfriend, I didn't like it-not one bit.*

Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson-Remember that cute romantic comedy a few years ago "50 First Dates", where Drew Barymore's memories only last a day and Adam Sandler tries to win her love every day.  Well this book also deals with a woman who loses here memories each night as she sleeps, but this is no romantic comedy and the plot is much more sinister. ****

Hex in the City by Shannon Swendson-This would be a great movie for Lifetime in October. The story about a girl who goes and works for magical creatures in NYC.  Fluffy, but not horrible-good beach read. **

The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan-My friend Alicia suggested this on. It is set a hundred years ago in Niagara Falls and I loved it until the last 20 pages. ***

Shadow of the Hegemon by Orson Scott Card -It is a sequel to Ender's Game, which is one of my all time favorites. It takes place after Ender's Game, where world powers are each trying to exploit the battle school children. This is more a book about world politics than sci-fi.***

Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos-She is one of my favorite authors (She is happily married to the guy that writes the "No David" books.  I loved her first 2 books and loved this one as well.  It is the story of a college friendship that explodes when one of them marries a tool and of their journey to find each other again.  It is a beautiful story of love, loss, and belonging with funny quirky characters.  I would give it a perfect 5 stars if it wasn't for a frat boy character with a potty mouth so I can not suggest it to my mother.   ****3/4 Read Kammy's review here (it's always better than mine).

Caught by Harlan Coben-It's a murder mystery about a man that is falsely accused of child molestation.  Like all of his books, it is a real page-turner and perfect for plane rides, but much cleaner than some of his earlier books. ****

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsly (read my friend Alicia's review)  I really loved this book and it makes me want to move to Scotland-or at least visit.  It goes back and forth between 1708 and modern times.  It is a great historical fiction with a modern twist and there's even a pretty good romance.****1/2

  2. Thanks for the recommendations! I'm always on the lookout for a great book to read. I'm glad to hear that I shouldn't bother with the Mr. Darcy books . . . I've seen one at the library and wondered if it was worth my time . . . guess not! ;-)
