We Made Sushi!!!

Since Sushi is one of the only remotely healthy things my son will eat without complaints,  I thought it would be a fun thing for us to learn together. I also figured it would be a skill that help him woo women in a few years.

I searched for some recipes and found Just One Cookbook's recipe for sushi rice.  I sort of followed her instructions, except that I do not own a rice cooker, so I just used a pan and followed the directions on the bag.  She also suggests mixing the rice in a large wooden bowl called a "hangiri".  I used what I had-a plastic bowl adorned with the Texas flag.
I did buy the little roller mat thingy.  We added crab, onions, radish, cucumber and avocado to ours and then rolled it up.

Our first attempt ended up being big, fat, ugly sushi roll. It looked more like a burrito than sushi (I blame the Texas flag bowl).   After a little practice, and we were able to make some that we weren't embarrassed to feed to the the family.

We dipped them in wasabi, soy sauce, Thai chili sauce or spicy mayo. In case you didn't know (I didn't) spicy mayo is merely mayonnaise mixed with sriracha hot sauce.

We've made them a few more times since, and as I am typing this up, I think we need to make them again soon.

Do you have a favorite sushi recipe?

  1. Yum! I love sushi, sadly the rest of my family does not.
My favorite rolls usually have something tempura in it. And spicy creamy sauces too. Not healthy... :)
Your big burrito looking roll may not be the prettiest, but it still looks very tasty!

  2. I like the crunchy tempura ones too-I just hate the way deep frying makes my house smell. I want to head down to the Asian Market to see what else we can stick in them.

  3. I love making vegetable rolls at home. I often substitute quinoa for the rice, not traditional but yummy, and I find easier to work with than rice.

  4. I think it looks really tasty! Congrats to you on doing something fun and getting your son involved, too. I bet he was proud! I think in your first sentence you mean he will 'woo' women - only woe if he uses some bad seafood, but it's always possible lol!!
    Have a great weekend! :)

  5. I'm so impressed! I love those kind of rolls. I'm going to have to try this. But I can't believe you don't have a rice cooker. I used mine ALL the time. They are awesome.

  6. These look great!
I took once a one-day-course at a local sushi"cook". So I have one tip for your next time. Leave space above your rice on the nori. Put only on 2/3 of the nori the rice. And leave the rolls in roomtemperature for about 10 minutes. So the nori can "glue" together.
My favourite selfmade sushi comes with roasted chicken and avocado :) I think I have to do some soon :)
I like this site here: http://www.sushi-tsu.info/welcome.html From there I got many ideas for sushi.
Have a great week! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

  7. It wasn't a big, fat and ugly sushi roll! It still looks great even for a first try at making one! I bet you can make such wonderful rolls now, Tara! There's this peculiarity with sushi that makes it very authentic in both taste and look. If ever you find yourself craving for more, there are some places that serve exceptional and exquisite sushi. :) Thanks for sharing!
